five topics: the aspects of connectivity,
software, hardware, the social impact and contents of the telecenters’
activities, and their management and strategies for the economic development.
Regarding connectivity, a study on satellite connection and the establishing
alliance and strategies to negotiate better prices for the Caribbean
were proposed. The necessity of developing free software, training
and exchanging of packages for the telecenters, were also emphasized.
Meanwhile, on the area of hardware the emphasis was placed on the
recycling projects and the efficient disposal of hardware, as well
as the generation of alternative energy sources. The topic of impact
and social content of the telecenters brings along a list of opportunities
for collaboration, pointing out the development of data bases related
to relevant topics such as, telecenters’ organization and management,
multimedia resources, a permanent exchange of human resources (such
as operators, technicians, facilitators, etc.) and programs of training
and certification. The area of management and strategies to make the
centers economically sustainable is one of the areas of greater challenge.
It implies the production of the necessary resources through strategies
that allow the functioning community telecenters on a self sustainable
basis and as a place for economic, social and cultural development
within a frame of cultural diversity in all the aspects of human life.
On the last day of the meeting, more specific work groups were organized;
the development and products of these groups are a work in process.
It is an open question if
we will be capable to generate an organization structure that could
maximize the existing resources and, at the same time, responds to
the needs and goals of development of the diverse community telecenters
projects already existing and those on the way. We invite the readers,
who are interested in this project, to visit Caribbean Community Telecenters,
where all the documentation associated with this experience can be
found.
The areas that will be part of
a work schedule were divided into
