A wonderful beach, sand and sun was the setting scenario for the Caribbean Community Telecenters Workshop, at Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from July 20th thru 22nd, 2006. This workshop was sponsored by several governmental and non governmental entities like the Fundación Taiguey, Telecentre.org, Institute for Connectivity in the Americas (ICA) and UNESCO. Its main purpose was to generate a collaborative experience of Caribbean telecenters in order to facilitate a network for the development of the region and to fight the digital gap. The activity reunited a diversity of people with different academic and professional baggage but above it all, the plurality in life experiences, cultural and language background was notable. There’s no doubt that language diversity marks an important dare for every collaborative project in our area. Notwithstanding, these differences can be saved if there is a unity of purposes. Precisely it is here where the difficulty lied. Producing a consensus about what was the desired form of organization for this group was a controversial issue. Two different positions were discussed: to form a brand new organization or to be part of one of the existing organizations for Latin American and the regions of the Caribbean, for example somos@telecentros or Caribbean Virtual Community of TICs’ actors (CIVIC).
